Girish Raghunath Karnad is a contemporary writer, playwright, actor, and movie director. After being honored by the Government of India with the Padma Shri in 1974 and Padma Bhushan in 1992, there is barely anything this man has not achieved. To top it all, Girish Karnad has now been honored with ambassadorship of UNESCO's International Theatre Institute. The Paris based organization has honored other personalities including British theatre and film director Peter Brook, Italian playwright Dario Fo, French theatrical legend Ariane Mnouchkine and German choreographer Pina Bausch. At the age of 70, he is a well-known and established theatre personality as his plays have been translated and produced in several languages.
